IMPRESSION OF THE NEW CANCER SOCIETY'S LIONS LODGE
The site is
central, spacious, close to the hospital, and has stunning views of the lake. It has been
a hospital since 1924 and this caring tradition will continue. The new Lodge will also
allow increased support services and health promotion activities.
The new 2540 square metre building will have:
50 rooms
5 family units
IT facilities
A lounge and library overlooking the lake
Therapeutic massage and meeting rooms
It will accommodate around 600 people per year.
The project is expected to be complete December 2010. Watts and Hughes Construction
Waikato/Bay of Plenty Ltd. began construction in January 2010.
The History:
The original Lions Lodge was built on the grounds of the Waikato Hospital and since 1971
has provided free accommodation and meals to thousands of patients throughout the Waikato
and Bay of Plenty receiving treatment at the Waikato Regional Cancer Centre. The building
was owned by the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society and the land by the Waikato DHB. Due
to the DHBs need for the land in 2007 the Lodge was purchased from the Cancer
Society and the funds from the sale were invested in the old Braemar Hospital site.
The lions Clubs:
Lions Clubs throughout the region have fundraised for the Lodge in past years and they
have pledged their support for this project. In recognition of their support, in 1996 the
Lodge became known as the Lions Cancer Lodge and this recognition will continue at the new
site.
The Cost and Fundraising:
Because the move was anticipated, the Cancer Society covered the cost of purchasing the
site and some building costs; however, the Society needs the publics help to raise
$4.25 million to cover additional costs of the rebuild and renovation.
The project will cost $14,150,000 a breakdown (both in building and fundraising
terms) is to the right:
